Ending the year off right

Usually one wants to start the year off right, but I thought I would get a head start. Right now we are away on vacation, visiting with Jennifer's mom's family. Tomorrow we head to the in-law's house for a few days. These family gatherings usually preclude the opportunity to exercise, but jennifer and I are making it a priority this year. Jennifer brought her workout stuff as did I, including my P-90 video. Although I am writing this very early tues I actually worked out late Monday pm in the hotel exercise room. I did a vigorous 35 minutes on the eliptical.

We will have to see if I get a video workout or two in before going home. The in-laws are expecting 28 sleep over guests on new year's eve!

gliding along

The boys wanted to go sledding this afternoon, so I threw my x-c skis into the van too, and while they sledded, I did laps around the park - for over an hour.
Genuflecting is going to be sore tomorrow.

So after getting off to a rough start of the week, it ended pretty well.

Weds - x-c ski
Thursday - video
Friday - shovel
Saturday - x-c ski

Friday, December 19, 2008

Thurs. and snowy Friday

Thursday - PM Sweat Cardio with shoulder band work and abs.

Friday - 1.5 hours of shoveling 8 to 10 inches of snow (depending on the drifts) in the afternoon. One heck of a good workout.
I had every intention of going X-C skiing this morning, knowing it was supposed to snow. But at 6:30pm it was coming down in buckets and blowing completely sideways with 7 degree windchill.
I saved the workout until shoveling......
Now off to ice the shoulder.

Wintertime fun

For the first time in probably 14 years I went cross country skiing this morning. About 25 minutes. New fallen snow (except the city had already plowed the sidewalks) so I skied on the right of way to the school yard, around it a few times, and home.
Then I shoved for 20 minutes.

All before sunrise (which isn't hard - it still isn't up yet).

This week so far

lethargic.

But off to bed for a fun surprise workout in AM...stay tuned.

Last week in review

A pretty good week intake and output.

4 Sweat videos, 3 with abs and shoulder therapy.
and a swim.

Momentum....

Swim,and lunch with....

...this guy
U.S. Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Conway
He is the Commandant of the United States Marine Corps.
Head honcho.
(okay, it was lunch with me and a couple hundred guys....but I did shake his hand and have a brief conversation with him. He was impressive).
Finished a perfect week of induction. Feeling pretty good.

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

Another pretty good day

Good induction intake

Cardio w/abs in PM

Still on track.....

Tuesday, December 9, 2008

Induction day 5, and another workout

This morning I did the sweat cardio video again (w/o yoga & punches) and did shoulder band exercises and 120 abs. Did all three rounds of 'knees up' holding Meg who was just waking up.

I am on day five of induction. Telltale signs of ketosis has kicked in yesterday (new energy, etc.) Feeling pretty good. But it is all about momentum!

Slipped yesterday in the snow (walking over the tire track on my driveway) while pushing the trash can to the curb and cranked my knees trying not to fall. Thought they would be sore today while working out, but not too bad. Is a little sore up and down stairs.

So after icing the shoulder as per doctors orders, I will apply the pack to my knees too.

So, this is what it is like getting older......

Friday, December 5, 2008

still here, still working out

Thanksgiving week wasn't great, but this week has been better

COLD weather - 10 to 15 degrees below normal highs.

The shoulder is still acting up, so I can't do the Sculpt (lifting) video yet, and can't do punches or yoga part of the video (too much strain on shoulder). Even without yoga and punches it is still 30+ minutes of stretch and workout.

Monday - PM SWEAT cardio video workout, with extra set kicks, and 100 abs
Tuesday - AM Sweat video, & shoulder band workout, 110 abs
Weds - off
Thursday - AM Sweat video, shoulder band workout, 110 abs PM - Pool workout
Friday - AM Sweat video, shoulder band workout, 120 abs

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Adding some shoulders

Did my shoulder bands as recommended by doctor. The shoulder is actually starting to feel better. I don't 'notice' it all the time, which means the pain is not steady even when not using it.

Did Sweat Cardio video with first set of yoga moves. Working my shoulder into it gradually. Skipped punching for that reason.
100 Abs.

Last week's debaucle

I got in a run, a video cardio, and a swim.

Then for the weekend we drove to Western Michigan for a rocket launch.
Stood out in the cold, wind, rain. Caught a cold. (resistance probably down last week anyway from stress- see Piety Hill Musings for reason why).

not a great week overall

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

Working out, avoiding the shoulder

Did the Power 90 Sweat (cardio) workout today, without the yoga and punching (because of the strain on the sore shoulder).

With those two things removed, it is 3.5 minutes stretch, 20+ minutes cardio (legs up, thrusts, jumping jacks, running, run lunge, x-work, hopping, fast feet, and karate kicking front and side), 2 minute cool down, 2.5 minute stretch, and 100+ abs

Plus the band exercises given by the orthopedic guy.

And then ice for the shoulder

shoulder news

I went to the orthopedist Tuesday.
The x-rays showed either some calcification or arthritis.
Either way, he said I have too much strength for it to be a tear (at least of any consequence).

He basically did the old line, "Hey doc - it hurts when I do this". "Then don't do it"......
For 6 weeks no throwing, no lifting heavy things over my head, no swimming freestyle, etc.
He gave me some bands and some exercises to do with them, keeping the arms below the shoulder to get some blood flowing into it for healing. He also advised icing it at least once, if not twice a day.
If after 6 weeks there is no improvement, we will try shots, before going to surgery.

On Thursday I did get in the pool with my swimming group. I purposely tanked my relay race since I couldn't really swim. In the game afterwards I stayed in shallow water and did get off two shots, making one.

Today I did the Cardio/Sweat video without the yoga (too much pressure on the shoulders), and did 100 reps of abs. The 'punching' part I had to modify, since doing the cross and uppercut with the left arm was too much pressure on the shoulder.

I then did the simple band exercises.

Now I am sitting here typing, right afterwards, with ice on the shoulder as advised.

FYI - yesterday and today have been my only workouts so far this week. It hasn't been a good week for input or output. But so far today.....

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Whoo Hooo!

Cold, Windy, Crisp morning!

And a great run....2,4,5,5 on 1.5 between

Ankle, knees, back sore.

Felt great anyway.

Friday, October 24, 2008

Still alive....

Last week -

Two runs (one in Milwaukee), a video, and a long walk with family.
3 hours yardwork (rake and cut)

So far this week.
One video, half-hearted swim (shoulder pain), one run (today). 2 & 3's.
Yardwork later this morning.

Made appointment for November 4th to get my shoulder checked out.
It is sore almost all the time now.

Monday, October 13, 2008

Last week summed up

Pretty good!

2 runs, a cycle, a swim, and a video workout plus 4 hours of yardwork.

Friday, October 10, 2008

Weds and Thurs

Weds - raining in the AM, so in the PM, while Jennifer was running I did the Power 90 Level 3/4 Sweat (cardio). Long time since I did it, and it felt good!

Thurs - swam

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

trodding the asphalt again

Another run today. It is so dark now at 6 or 6:30 (or 7am for that matter) that I am leary to ride my bike. I should get a reflective vest and blinking light.
Also, when it is colder, the cold breeze hurts my eyes - I need to get a pair of clear glasses to wear while riding to keep the wind out.

Today it was about 50 degrees when I left the house (sweatshirt, shorts, light gloves) and when the wind blew it was a bit chilly - but felt GREAT. I ran well and with some enthusiasm (especially compared to yesterday).

3,3,3,7 with 2 between each.

plus 100 crunches/abs

Monday, October 6, 2008

a sluggish start

Up and out at 6am.

Ran 2 on 2 off for 24 minutes

Sore, lethargic, & drizzly (the weather, not me)

Sunday, October 5, 2008

Blah....

This past week.

Blah.

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

a short, wet roll

Got out about 6:45am for a misty wet ride. Went for a short ride (22 minutes), but rode pretty hard.

Month's end.
Pretty good output for September.
Input had much to desired.....

Saturday, September 27, 2008

a grey saturday

woke up with a startle at 7:47am, realizing Will had to be at his soccer game by 8:45am.

Although we had a good long walk to the street carnival in town, no formal workout.

But a good week, despite the travel at the beginning.

1 run, 2 cycle, 1 swim, 1 abs, 2 long walks.

Friday, September 26, 2008

a friday roll

up late, and out for a 28 minute ride.

Sore today in different parts of the legs. Swim yeserday?

We did a family abs workout. Jennifer put on the Abs 100 dvd and all hit the floor for 100 crunches, etc. (even Meg made and effort).

Plus - grass cutting (backyard hasn't been done in 3 weeks!!!).

PM - a long walk with family

Thursday, September 25, 2008

Cycle/exploring

Rode this morning 27 minutes.

Went up Jefferson, and up and down the streets that dead end up against the lake. Some pretty interesting houses back there!

With it now Fall I like the cooler mornings, but I don't like how dark it is when I go out.

PM BONUS - jumped into the pool for 20 quick, hard laps. Felt great (and great to be back at the gym in anticipation of having to move indoors in the coming months to workout).

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

home and back on track....

Ran this AM - 2,4,6,5 with a minute in between. Felt GREAT.
Would have run more but was anxious to get home to let Jennifer go on her run!
(late start - 7am for me)

Vacation summary

I bought a pedometer for our vacation.

I did get in two runs, and two days swimming laps in the AM before everyone else was up.

In Tennessee we walked over 5 miles (Aquarium).
In Florida walked
7.6 miles
10.3 miles
9.1 miles
8.4 miles
7.8 miles
for a total of 45.2 miles in FLA, 50.2 overall.

On my 10.3 mile day, with damp socks, I got blisters on the balls of my feet!
I was more proactive with a dry pair of socks mid-day on the other days.

Friday, September 12, 2008

a jog in Georgia

Ran today - 15 on, 7 off. REALLY hilly around Jennifer's sister's house.
And loose dogs to escort and warn you as you go along!!!

Wednesday, September 10, 2008

Cold Cycle

Gloves and all today. Rode a medium 26+ minutes.

For the week so far
2 Cycle, 1 Run....

Tomorrow - off on holiday.
I have packed running clothes/shoes and swim gear, and a pedometer for walking around the Magic Kingdom!

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

running

This morning the pavement was wet from all the rain overnight, so I decided to go for a run instead.

Felt good all the way - 18 running, 8 walking.

D.V. tomorrow I will cycle again and then off for a vacation to Disney starting Thursday!

Monday, September 8, 2008

a cool monday

Temps in the high 50's today.

27 minute cycle, with a minute off in the midst while I grabbed some laminate samples from the old house to bring home for Jennifer to look at.

Saturday, September 6, 2008

finishing off the week

cycled for 23+ and then off to a rocket launch!

4 cycles this week, no runs, and a long walk with Meg in the stroller.

Thursday, September 4, 2008

Yesterday - blah! Today - better

Wednesday I was a slug, all the way around...

Today I cycled for a solid 30+ minutes. Rode hard.

In the PM - walked for an hour with meg in stroller

Tuesday, September 2, 2008

a short roll

Woke up early to a sore back. Took an advil, slept another 20 minutes until alarm went off.

Went for a short ride - 21+ minutes, but rode hard!

Monday, September 1, 2008

Labor Day

Went out for a cycle - 30 minutes with a great sprint at the end!
explored the neighborhood on the other side of Alter, including another park with baseball diamonds (6) on the river, and a closed parks and rec pool.

The park was trashed...trash everywhere.
Why don't people have more self respect and clean up after themselves?

finishing off last week

pretty good week for output
2 runs, 2 cycles, and a HARD 4+ hours of yard work (bushes, lawn, etc).

Input? eh.... Could have been better.

Thursday, August 28, 2008

a drizzly run

Ran today, and ran pretty well.
Sprinkling rain when I started.

ran 2,5,8,6, and then a sprint for 1 (22 total) with 8 minutes total walk between

Nothing yesterday.

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

In the dark

Up shortly before 6, and out the door by 6:10am.

Cycled 27 minutes - mostly in the dark (missing those early sunrises in June/July!).
55 degrees (wore sweatshirt/light gloves for the wind).

Make note - pick up reflective vest to wear for early rides!

Monday, August 25, 2008

Monday moaning

A sluggish run.

16 minutes total, with a strong sprint at the end.
Walks in between.

Last week - a pretty good one

Good eating all week.

3 cycles and a run, and yardwork.

Pretty good all around.

Friday, August 22, 2008

Another adventure

Went for a CYCLE today, 30+ minutes.

Did some more exploring of the neighborhood on the other side of Alter in Detroit. The Hare Krishna/Fisher Mansion is less than 8 minutes bike ride away (good to know since the Rowing Club that meets there has beginner programs for the boys in the coming years). Also found a pretty, well maintained neighborhood that is an 'island', being surrounded the the canals to the river.

Perhaps next week I can see if I can cycle to the Manoogian Mansion....

Thursday, August 21, 2008

Re-cycle

Yesterday once again Meg's sleep pattern through us for a loop. By the time I was up, and down, and up again it was late. And I packed clothes to try to get a work out in in the daytime, but time got away from me.

But I have been eating very well.

Today I was up and cycled 30 minutes.

Good workout

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

A strange day!

Last night Meg was tossing and turning from 11pm to midnight, and at midnight asked me to rock her downstairs in the big chair.

We slept on and off in that chair from 12 to 4:30am. A fitful, in and out sleep. And in the midst I had an awful dream and woke up stiff and sore - I had tensed up in the dream!

I took Meg upstairs at 4:30 and went to bed. Slept through the 6am alarm. Jennifer got up at 6:30, ran, showered and made breakfast BEFORE I woke up at 7:45!

However, I did get a RUN in this afternoon. I put Meg in the jog-stroller and we went down to pick up the boys at Karate camp, taking a serpentine route around the neighborhood to add mileage.

Ran 17, walked 20 (including 10 of it back with the boys).

Now off to bed.

Monday, August 18, 2008

Another good start

Another Monday morning workout.

Cycled 26+ minutes

Set the alarm for 6am. Woke up a minute before the alarm and turned off the alarm on the first 'beep'.
Then I blinked, and heard Jennifer getting up to run - 6:25am. Argh.

So I went out after she ran. I like to get up and out first. I am funny that way.

Saturday, August 16, 2008

Rolling along

Another cycle today. 26+ minutes. Felt Great!

3 runs, 3 cycles - a pretty good week.

Friday, August 15, 2008

Awesome adventure

Went for a 33 minute cycle - felt awesome!

Explored the neighborhood in Detroit along the river just past GPP.
Discovered the Detroit Parks and Rec Adult Handicapped center on the river, the closed (and beautiful) St. Martin's Catholic Church, and the former Fisher Mansion, now HQ to the Hare Krishna Cult. It also hosts the Detroit Women's Rowing Association.

Thursday, August 14, 2008

broke through....

Today I did not want to run.
Out of bed at 6:35am (about 35 minutes later than when I first woke up).
Sore legs, tight back.
Lingered checking email, news-websites.
Finally changed and out the door after 7am.
Thought "I am just going to walk today - too sore"
Then decided to do a little 2 minute run.
Sore. Decided I would walk the rest.
Then decided to do a 3 minute jog. Still sore - ankle throbbing.
Made a turn towards home and would walk the rest.
Thought I would do another short jog toward and then up my street.
Started running - 5 minutes.
Then while walking turned a block before my house.
Started running again around the next block.
Another 5 - this one felt a little better.
Ended up with 15 minutes of running, 7 walking.
The last 5 it felt like I had conquered my urge to not run.
Hurrah!

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Rolling fast

Cycled today - 30 minutes - felt great!

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Off to a pretty good start

Ran Monday (the hardest day to get up and out).
3,5,7,4 on, 1.5 off between - felt GREAT!

Ran today
2,4,4,5 - with 1.5/2.5 off - felt AWFUL! Started with hammies sore and stiff, then ankle hurt, and by the end of the run the right shin hurt.

Cycle tomorrow - D.v.

strange week finished strong....

Friday - cycled for 26 minutes, yardwork
Saturday - ran

3 runs, 1 cycle

Thursday, August 7, 2008

Strange week so far

Monday and Tuesday - Nada (overtired, overstressed - workout would have helped!)

Weds - started to run, ran into friend, talked LL baseball politics. Ended up being a short walk/jog

Today - a real workout: Ran 2,2,4,6,5 with 1.5 before and during.
Not a real long one, but ran hard and felt pretty good.

Sunday, August 3, 2008

A pretty good week

2 runs (one pretty lame), 2 cycles, 3 days yardwork.

A pretty good week for output.

Friday, August 1, 2008

Bad Weds, nothing Thurs, good Friday

No, not some new sort of Holy Week, but this past three days exercise-wise....

Weds - went out to run and everything hurt: ankle, knee, shoulder, elbow (the last two have been chronic all baseball season but I slept funny on it to boot). Ended up with a pitiful walk/jog barely worth noting.

Thurs - still sore, achy. Did nothing good.

Friday - hurrah! Out for a good run! 2,4,6,11 with 1.5 off before and between. Ankle a bit stiff, but otherwise felt better as I went along.
Plus today is yardwork morning - another 2 miles of walking while pushing the mower.

The sidewalks/streets were particularly busy with people this morning!
Very humid too.

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

monday and today

Yesterday it was another 1.5 hours of yard work - trimming bushes (all work at shoulder level or higher), edging, etc. Worked up a good sweat in the early morning sun

Today - 28 minute bike ride. Really humid - good and sweaty!

FYI - Jennifer has been running 4 or more days a week and doing well! She is forming a marathon relay team for the Free Press Marathon. I am really psyched for her!

Sunday, July 27, 2008

Long day on the feet

Today being Sunday I was on my feet most of the AM.
Then drove to Michigan International Speedway for Sam's rocket launch - after a 90 minute drive was on the feet for 3+ hours.
Then drove home 90 minutes, had a quick supper, and then cut grass from 7:15pm to 9:15pm (yes, it was pretty dark when I finished). And did it in double time - knew I had to move quickly to beat the sunset. Plus the grass in the back was really high, since I didn't cut it last week.
Worked up a good sweat! And still have to whip and trim some bushes....

Another 2/1 week...plus mowing

2 runs, 1 cycle, plus mowing in the extreme heat.

Friday, July 25, 2008

In Sturgis

Yesterday we went to Lake Michigan to play on the beach - good fun.

Today I went for a run 2,3,5,7,3 with 2 between and after at 9am. Felt pretty good.

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

cycle

Mixing it up I hope will motivate me to get out everyday, and be a bit easier on the knees and ankles

Rode the bike today, at a pretty good clip, for 26 minutes.

While I run I feel sweaty pretty early on. While cycling the wind wicks away the sweaty feeling but the legs get fatigued. Then you stop cycling and you sweat buckets while cooling down.

We leave tonight for Sturgis for a few days. Am packing the running stuff - we will have to see how motivated I am with all the family around to get out and run.

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

So far this week

Sunday - cut grass in 90 degree heat/humidity! Only did 1/2 lawn b/c I had to shower to go back to do the 5:30pm Service.

Yesterday - nothing but 20 minutes grass cutting (the back part of the side - still have the backyard to do) and a game of catch with the boys.

Today - Ran this AM. Felt okay but ankle started hurting near the end. 2,3,4,5 with 2 between and after.
Cooler today (60's) but still humid.

St. Mike's Week...

Last week at the St. Michael's Conference I am glad to say I got in 3 good workouts!
Ran twice, and Square Danced for over and hour (great exercise, and fun too).

Eating went well until Thursday. Have to say also that I think I wasn't careful - such as the dressing for the salad was most likely sweetened.

But I am back on track again and feeling pretty good.

Friday, July 11, 2008

Something 'new' today

yesterday a lethargic run/walk - 20 minutes total.

Today ---- 32 minutes of cycling (first time since Summer 2005).
Felt awesome!

Still perfect induction, although volume could use some work.

Wednesday, July 9, 2008

Weds.

Slept in (argh)
Did have baseball practice tonight (not much exercise though)

Starting week two of induction - so far so good!

Tuesday, July 8, 2008

Good Run today - lots to pray about

I do some of my most clear headed praying while running - and with the General Synod of the Church of England meeting this week there is plenty to pray about!

Run - 2,4,6,8 with 2 between, 1 before and after.

Monday, July 7, 2008

A much better week last week, a good start this

Last week 3 runs, lots of yard work another day (heavy lifting, etc.).

Perfect induction since July 1.

Still going!
Momentum....

Friday, July 4, 2008

Quick Check in...

No work out Thursday - pouring rain in AM.

But a third perfect input day.

It is all about momentum.

Wednesday, July 2, 2008

much better!

I had a good nights sleep, my nose isn't running much, and my head feels clearer!

Ran again - 2,4,6,8 on, 2 off in-between (20 run, 10+walk)
Beautiful outside - 68 degrees low humidity.

Tuesday, July 1, 2008

New month, new resolve...again

I got up to run today - and it was a hard one.
Sunday night I came down with a summer cold.
I was really dragging Monday - runny nose, sinus congestion, headache.

This morning I felt only a little better - went out for a run but after a night of mouth breathing my throat was really sore and it was hard to breath.

I managed 12 minutes of running and 14 minutes of walking by 2's.

Will try again tomorrow. I am actually feeling pretty good tonight - only a slight runny nose. I played catch with the boys for about an hour.

When the cold is gone I am restarting Power 90 for July and August.

Perfect input today. Deo Gratias.

Last week's improvement

3 runs (two really good ones flanking a lame one).
And grass cutting (a solid 1.5 hours of walking, pushing a mower...counts for something....).

Thursday, June 26, 2008

Much better!

Felt GREAT today!

Ran 2,3,5,5,5,3 with 1,1,2,2,2 off

Humid (fog almost) and about 68.

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Two runs in a row - not a good idea

I like running. Yes, it is painful, etc. But there is something about human beings that we were created to move, and I think running is a part of our nature. And it feels like a workout. I like swimming too, but after a swim you are fatigued but clorinated. After a run you feel like you have worked out. Legs wobbly, sweat dripping off of you!

I know one of the liberating, wonderful dreams I occasionally have (while sleeping) is that I am running, everywhere, flawlessly and without effort.

Reality isn't like that! I am old, heavy, and slow. My knees and ankles have seen better days.
Yet I am drawn to run, no matter how poorly I do it.

I ran yesterday. 2,3,4,5,4, with 7 minutes of walking interspersed in the middle. It was a good, sweaty workout.

Today - sore, stiff. Tried to run anyway. Ended up doing a 20 minute mostly walk, some jog.

Two days in a row is not good for me (knees, ankles, legs in general), at least at this time.

Last week

2 runs
lots of baseball....

Friday, June 20, 2008

slogging along

Okay, so that sounds like something rainy, but I think 'slogging' sounds like how it felt today - heavy legs, lethargic forward motion.

But I pushed thru.

2,3,4,5,2 on, 1.5 off each.

Beautifully sunny, 60 degrees
Also, despite the physical effects, a very prayerful run.

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Today

I went for a run today. It was chilly outside when I left - about 60. Temp felt good after the runs last week/week before when it was humid and hot even at 6:30am!

I am really having a struggle getting re-motivated to be regular about input and output!

Way behind....

Two weeks ago - 3 runs, 1 swim
Last week - 2 runs, lots of hard yard/house work!

Tuesday, June 3, 2008

New week, new month...

...new start. Not bad for a monday!

Run in AM (with Meg in stroller) 2,4,6,6,1.5 on with 1 off between.
both ankles were hurting Sunday PM, but were fine for the run. A little stiff now as I stay up WAY too late watching the second overtime for the Red Wings.

Perfect induction today.
B -Egg Salad
M.S - sunflower seeds
L - Burger, salad
A.S. - sunflower seeds
D - burger, cabbage and cheese
N.S. - sunflower seeds

Thursday, May 15, 2008

back to lifting

At least as far as the Sculpt video goes.

It actually felt GREAT to get back into it, and I am trying to get myself psyched to knock off a few more weeks of Power 90 and then start P90X perhaps in July.

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

A good day today

Up early for a Sweat Video workout (sans yoga/abs).
Meant to go out and run but Meg woke up with me.

Then in the afternoon I came home to relieve Jennifer of Meg so she could go open the LL concession stand (she is supervisor this week). We planted flowers and the I put her in the jog-stroller and took her for a run to pick up the boys at Karate. We took the long route there, running 2,2,2,2,4 on the way there, with 1 or 1.5 off between, and then 4, 4, and 4 on the way back with one off between. 24 minutes running total.

A good day - longest run in a long time, and sweat video after a few weeks away from it.
Will be sore in AM!

Wednesday, May 7, 2008

Don't put off to later...

The last two days I have set my alarm, woke up, shut it off and INTENDED to get up and run/workout, only to blink and see it was an hour later. Upon re-waking telling myself "I can workout this afternoon".

Monday afternoon I had to coach William's baseball game and by the time Andrew finished his job it was after 9pm.

Yesterday I figured I would put Meg in the jog stroller after work and get the boys from Karate jogging there and back. Then there was a fire at the curate's house and that certainly took up the afternoon!

This morning - up and at it! Ran 2,3,4,6,5, with 1.5 off between except between 4 and 6 when I took 3.5 off looking at the curate's house, now all boarded up until it can be repaired from the fire damage.

Another run

Woke up this morning VERY sore! But I got the shoes on and ran anyway.

The ankle was stiff - combo rain coming and soreness from yesterday.

2 on 2x, 3 on 2x, 4on, 5 on with 1.5 minutes between each.

Still out here!!!

A strange two weeks - a couple of runs, heavy lifting (40lbs bags of sand, soil, etc.) and lots of baseball.

Today - Back on track with working out AND journaling!
Ran 2 on 1 off, 4 on 1 off 3x, 6 on.

Saturday, April 19, 2008

A strange Friday/Saturday

I didn't get in a formal workout either day, but played a lot of baseball PLUS lugged 12 fifty pound bags of sand from the car to the new sandbox in the backyard.

My left Shoulder is really acting up.

Monday - Run
Tuesday - Run and Sculpt
Wednesday - nada
Thursday - Run
Friday and Saturday - baseball, yardwork, etc.

Thursday, April 17, 2008

Run but in AM

Got up early this AM and ran - 3 on 2 off 2x, 4 on, 2 off 1x, 8 on. 18 minutes on total.
Felt pretty good all the way.

Nothing yesterday. Had Vestry meeting in PM and home late.

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

Another Run...plus....

Once again I got home early enough to jog/walk down to the park with Meg in the stroller to pick up the boys. And then jogged/walked home. 2 on, 2 off 3x, 3on and 2 off 2x, and 5.5 on at end. 17.5 total jog, 10+ walk.

Then during American Idol I did a SCULPT (sans squats/lunges - the running is hard enough on the knees now). I left my computer at work so I did it by memory (I think I got everything).

Monday, April 14, 2008

Strange Run...

...but a run no less!

Got home early enough to put Meg in the stroller to pick up the boys at karate.

Ran 2 on 2 off 3 times plus 4.5 on before getting there.
Coming back I ran 2 on, 2 off (circling around the walking boys) twice, plus a 3 on too.

All together 17 minutes on, 12 or so walk.

A strange way, but a run no less!

over a hurdle

Didn't want to workout today.
Sore legs, lethargic attitude.

Worked out anyway (hence the hurdle). Mood improved during workout.
End up with a good SWEAT workout, 150 abs (the last 45 were a real chore!).

So this week -

Monday -SWEAT
Tuesday -SCULPT
Weds - RUN
Thursday - RUN
Friday - SCULPT
Saturday - SWEAT

A good week indeed.

Sore legs

Wow - two days of running in a row. New muscles, new soreness. Made genuflecting yesterday at retreat a chore!

This morning I woke up right before 6 and saw it was pouring rain - so I went back to bed.
Today is off from going into St. John's, so I worked out at 10:00 - Sculpt with 51 pushups at the last circuit, 121 total!

Going to try to get some outside playing in before the thunderstorms come this afternoon.

Thursday, April 10, 2008

Woohoo!!!

Ran again this AM (6:25).

2on, 2 off, 4 on 2off3x, 3 on. (17on total).

Left ankle, knee sore
Legs really tight and heavy at start, a bit better at end

33 degrees wind chill.

Wednesday, April 9, 2008

Run - finally

It was 53 this morning at 6:30 when I stepped out the door for my first run of the spring. It was a mellow one.

Ran 2 on, 2 off, 2 on, 2 off, 4 on, 2 off, 4 on, 2 off, 1 on.
Felt great to get back out there.

And baseball practice this evening for William's team.

Monday and Tuesday - GREAT WEATHER

What a wonderful treat - springlike weather here in the metro Detroit area!

Yesterday I came home a little early in anticipation of taking Meg for my first run of the Spring, but when I arrived home she had fallen asleep in the umbrella stroller (not good for running) with Jennifer, so we lifted the stroller inside and I did an inspired SWEAT video and worked up a really good sweat - from Power Yoga through 150 abs reps! Afterward I did a few laps around the diamond at the boys baseball practice, pitched, and did other fun active things.

Today, once again I hoped to get out for a PM run, but after a trip to the store for dinner on the way home, I was back too late to take Meg in the stroller to pick up the boys from Karate. So during American Idol I did the SCULPT video, and am back up the max 15 reps per exercise with the new, heavier weight. Another week or two and I will bump it up again. I also did 116 pushups, with 46 at the end. I will be sore tomorrow - a good sore!

Once again, I have put my running stuff at the bottom of the stairs - rain predicted. If I can get up early enough and it isn't raining I might venture out for that jog. Otherwise it is a Sweat video and baseball practice for William's team, D.v.

As for input - still doing great at induction. Feeling really energetic.

Something a bit different

Sore today from sleeping funny on my neck.

Today's workout included lots of stretching, throwing, bending, and even a few sprints at the end - baseball practice for all the boys (2 teams), as well as thorough house cleaning solo.

Friday, April 4, 2008

Still inducting, but lethargic workouts

With all good intentions of upping the workouts, I haven't. But the induction is coming along well!

Weds - Sweat workout in AM, cut a little short by Meg.
Thursday - meant to get to the pool, didn't, and was a bum in the PM.
Friday - mid-afternoon Sculpt, on the lethargic side, while watching Tiger Baseball (perhaps a source of my lethargy...they are now 0-4).

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

An early start, and an early hump day

On Sunday I did a Sweat workout. I don't usually work out on Sundays, but Jennifer was working out, so Meg and I went downstairs and did so as well.

Monday I took off, and Today I did Sculpt in the AM

Having let my CCL (Critical Carbohydrate Level) creep up in the last weeks (this is an Atkins level), the weight loss has stalled. So I have dropped down to Induction again.

On Induction, in my experience, the third day is the 'hump' day. It takes 3 days to pare back and knock off any carb cravings. Sunday and Monday were relatively easy. This morning I felt a little out of sorts, but by this afternoon I feel like I have gone over the hump and slipping into hard-core ketosis. Bring it on!

Last week's summary

Saturday was another dud, other than lots of walking around with the kids!

So for the week

Monday - Paint?
Tuesday - Sweat
Weds - Sculpt
Thursday - nothing
Friday - Swim

Friday, March 28, 2008

back to the paintbrush

Yesterday was busy with not much at all - no workout. I did take the boys to Lazer tag - but chatting with the parents doesn't constitute a workout!

Today - back to painting...this time the ceiling in the basement.
And then at 1:30pm Andrew, Will and I went for a SWIM. I did 52 lengths (but broken up in pieces since I was playing with the boys.
Afterwards - back to painting overhead. The shoulders should feel good tomorrow!

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

better

After yesterday's tightness and soreness, this morning I felt pretty good, and got a good Sculpt workout in before anyone else was up.

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Easter Week

After all the activity of Holy Week and Easter, I celebrated my day off Monday by...
painting the basement.
7 hours, and 3 coats later I have sore muscles in my shoulders, hammies, and back to show for it. Does that count as a workout?

Tuesday at 8pm I did the Sweat/Abs and despite the tight back and hammies I had a pretty good workout with William helping/cheering me on.

Two advil are calling tonight!

Last week's summary

Monday - Sweat (PM)
Tuesday - Sculpt (PM)
Weds - Swim (afternoon)
Thursday - Nothing
Friday - Sculpt (afternoon)
Saturday - Sweat (AM)

A pretty good week considering it was Holy Week!

Friday, March 21, 2008

Good Friday

Yesterday I planned on getting in a swim in the afternoon, but I got to visit a parishioner in the hospital in Ypsilanti. By the time I got home from Maundy Thursday Service and Garden Watch in was too late to workout.

Today, after the Good Friday Service, I got in a workout
Sculpt, with 130 Push ups (20 decline, 20 wide, 7/7/16, and 60- yes 60! - burn-outs).

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

40 hard lengths

I got in the pool this afternoon and swam hard. A good, fatigue-producing type of swim. It felt GREAT!

"I can make you thin"

I saw this show on Sunday PM called "I can make you thin".

It was interesting. The host, an englishman named Paul McKenna, who I gather from his website is a hypnotist, leads this series over the next couple of Sunday eveings.
Jennifer and I watched the first one Sunday.

This episode dealt with his 4 Golden Rules. Quite frankly they are all common sense.

1) When you are hungry, eat. (duh). Learn to listen to your body as it actually tells you it is hungry. Don't eat if you aren't, and don't let yourself get extremely hungry or you will overeat.

2) Eat what you want, not what you think you should. This was interesting, as he told a woman to throw away all the low-fat foods (good for him). He claims as you go on your body will help you to realize what is good for you. I think this one could be a landmine since I am convinced that for me in particular, and for many Americans in general, starches (particulary refined ones) are addictive and VERY bad for us and cause health problems and cravings. - yes this is Atkins talking - getting carbs from veggies.

3) Eat Consciously. I think this is a very good one! He says a problem is people shoveling food into their mouths (guilty) and not actually enjoying it. Not only that, it short-circuits your bodies ability to know when you are full! I know we have to tell our boys after they have wolfed down their seconds and want thirds that they should wait 20 minutes to see if they are still hungry! His suggestion? "I cannot emphasise this enough. Put the knife and fork down whilst you are chewing your food and really enjoy it - savour the taste, and enjoy the wonderful textures and sensations as you thoroughly chew each mouthful of food at least 20 times!"
I have been trying this this week and it is tough to slow down this much! He also mentioned on the show to not be distracted by radio/tv/reading, and I am guilty of having the radio on in the background at breakfast, and reading through lunch.

4) When you are full, stop eating (again - DUH). Tear up the membership card in the "clean plate club". I think #3 helps to figure out #4.

In the coming weeks shows will deal with overcoming emotional eating, supercharging your metabolism, breaking cravings, and improving ones body.
More info from Paul can be found at http://www.mckenna.com/

On the website I could read ahead to the coming episodes, but I think I will wait and check it out each Sunday night. The TV station can be found at http://www.tlc.com/

Once again - during Idol

Got a great workout in tonight while watching American Idol.

Sculpt Video
Took the dumbbells up to 15lbs each, and so I took the reps down to 12 reps today. Will probably do one more like that and then take it back up to 15 reps.

Push-ups? Awesome today. 16 decline, 20 wides, 7/7/26 in Fly/Tri/Die, 45 in the burnouts at end for a total of 121!

As for Input - am pulling it back to beginning Atkins Induction starting today.

Monday, March 17, 2008

This evening's fare

a good sweat workout, without anything missing, at 8pm.

Finishing off last week

Saturday - I was a bum. Nothing.

Worked out Tuesday through Friday
One Swim, one Sculpt, two sweat

Friday, March 14, 2008

an early morning

Meg woke us up at 5am. I finally got her back to sleep by about 6:15am

Did a hardcore Sweat workout, with abs - 150 Reps!

Feeling great now - and exhausted!

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Shortened Swim today

I got to the pool later than I had planned, and only swam 30 lengths instead of the preferred 40 (35 is 1/2 mile) because I had to get back for Evening Prayer.

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

Early morning start

Jennifer and I both got up early this morning, with Meg as well, and all worked out first thing.

Jennifer did her video on the TV, I put my video in my laptop.

Good Sculpt workout. 105 push-ups. What I feared was tendonitis in my left elbow seems to have disapated. Later in the week I plan on upping the dumbbell weight from 12 to 15.

Now off for my busiest weekday.

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

off to a lethargic start

Yesterday was my day off and I was a slug. Tried to blame it on sore knees and ankles from chasing rockets in a farmer's field on Sunday with Sam (uneven ground with rocks and cornstalk stubs are hard on the legs) but it was an excuse to be lazy.

Lazy continued today until tonight, when I did a Sweat video workout while American Idol was on. But even that was lethargic while doing it. Shorted the Abs after 60 reps...

Tomorrow's another day.

Sunday, March 9, 2008

A complete week

Monday - Sculpt
Tuesday - Sweat
Wednesday - Shovel
Thursday - Swim (and beavers)
Friday - Sculpt
Saturday - Sweat...and a bonus shovel at 9pm

NOT a bad week last week as far as output goes!

The "S" workouts continue

Nature provided Wednesday's workout

Shoveling! 50 minutes in the AM (worked up a good sweat)
and 10 more minutes in the evening at the Church

Thursday - Swimming (Beavers followed by 24 lengths).

Slept funny on my neck last night (might be related to shoveling now that I think about it) and it is quite sore today.

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

Tuesday evening

Another workout under the belt.
Did the Sweat/Abs (up to 150 reps on Abs!) while watching American Idol.

Yesterday I did the Sculpt video in the late afternoonl (day off from work and procrastinated all day until the boys went to karate)

Sore now, ready to fall into bed.....

Must get in some sort of workout tomorrow, Weds, the busiest day of the week at St. John's.

New month evaluation

So I am a few days early. The Leap Year has me off.

February -

Pluses - pretty regular about working out. Increases in reps on weights, push-ups, and abs.
Minuses - input still not on track.

Looking to March -
Take up intensity on video workouts. Get next weight up on barbells by mid-month.
As weather improves, add in a jog or two a week IN ADDITION to video workouts.
Get in swim laps at least 1x per week.
Input improvement.

Weds/Thursday

Wednesday, being the busy and late night, I didn't get a workout in.

Thursday AM - Sweat video, with truncated abs workout. Houseguests up and watching....

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

This week so far

Monday - Sweat, with all the trappings
Tuesday - Sculpt with 111 push ups, plus 15 minutes of pushing and lifting wet, heavy snow.

Now to bed - Weds are busy days at St. John's.

Finishing up last week

Saturday -Nada, with no excuse...

Monday - Sculpt
Tuesday - Swim
Wednesday - Sweat
Thursday - Nada
Friday - Sculpt
Saturday -Nada

Friday, February 22, 2008

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

Wednesday I did a lethargic Sweat workout in the AM, with one eye on the clock as I knew Meg would be up any minute. And she was before I did Abs work.

Thursday I was off from work and was a slug, saying to myself all day "I should work out soon" and never did.

Friday - up in the AM and did the Sculpt with 107 push-ups. Shorted myself on squats with sore legs.

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

Another week starting out pretty well

Monday - Sculpt with 107 push ups!
Tuesday - Swim 40 lengths (and swam pretty hard).

Sunday, February 17, 2008

Friday - nothing
Saturday - Sweat

Thursday, February 14, 2008

I forgot to mention....

....yesterday, Wednesday, I got up later than usual, so I didn't work out. Then I told myself I would swim and some point, and didn't. And I taught my evening class, and got home late. So I did no 'formal workout'

But I did shovel in the AM for 20 minutes, so that was at least something, but not much.

Slow start, then some extra workouts

Did the Sculpt workout this morning, with only 102 push ups (did more decline at the beginning though).
Was a bit lethargic, particularly on the squats. I figured later in the day I would have my beavers group, and then could swim some laps.

At lunch, I did my beavers and had an unusually vigorous session. But I was in the last match of the day, and by the time I had lunch it was too late to go back in for a swim.

But then tonight Andrew had basketball practice. Since it is right before the local school's vacation week, attendance was sparce (only 4 of the 10 kids). So after a 1/2 hour of drills, the two coach/dads invited me to join them as we played 3 on 4 for about 30 minutes.

I am not a good basketball player, but it was fun, and a pretty good workout in khakis and a sweater! And now tonight, after all three things, my arms and legs are pretty fatigued! So it was a pretty good day.

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

Despite the bitter cold...

..I am still getting the workouts in. But for the foreseeable future, they will be indoor ones.

Monday - Sculpt video with 106 push ups!
Tuesday - Sweat video w/o abs (worked out in the evening, and ran out of time to do abs before I had to go and pick up the boys from Karate).

Sunday, February 10, 2008

a good workout week

Last week was a good one

Monday - Sweat with bump up to 120 abs
Tuesday - Sculpt
Wednesday - Swim 42 lengths
Thursday - Sweat (lethargic without yoga, punches, abs)
Friday - Sculpt (with 99 pushups!)
Saturday - Sweat (full blown)

Friday, February 8, 2008

99!

Did 99 push ups today (across 4 circuits)! Awesome.
Did Scult Video today, plus the bonus of 20 minutes of pushing snow.

Yesterday did a lethargic Sweat video, w/o yoga or punching or abs....
Bonus - 20 minutes of pushing snow, and beavers.

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

Ash Wednesday

Was up with Meg from 5am to nearly 6am and then went back to bed until 7:30am.
A morning workout was out of the question time-wise.

About 2:45pm I went for a swim - 42 lengths.

How to get in a cardio video workout this evening after the 6pm Ash Weds Mass, but it won't be bad if I don't since I've already had a workout today.

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

Two days at the beginning

Yesterday I dawdled all day. Didn't work out in the AM. Told myself I would swim in the afternoon and somehow that slipped away.
But in the PM I did the Cardio Sweat video, with Abs (bumped these up to 120 reps).
Meg and William did it with me (actually, William actually did most of the video).

This morning I got right to work with the sculpt video, even upping the push ups to 90 total!

I always feel better when I start of the day exercising.

Saturday, February 2, 2008

Finishing off a pretty good week

Scupt workout - Sets of 12 reps for weights. 75 total push-ups including 30 at end.
knees are sore, so went shorter on lunges/squats

A good week
Tuesday - Sweat and Abs (110)
Weds - Swim 40 laps
Thursday - Sculpt and Swim 20
Friday - Sweat and Abs (110)
Saturday - Sculpt

Friday, February 1, 2008

If I could set up a perfect workout schedule....

....at least for the next 5 months

February and March - Power 90 with at least 2x swimming and a jog or two a week bonus.

April, May, June - order P90x and go crazy with that....

Of course, one day/week at a time.

another "bonus" day

I've decided that at least for February and March the Power 90 3/4 is going to be the standard daily workout. Anything else: Swimming, Jogging, Shoveling, etc. will be a 'bonus' second workout of the day.

This morning I did the Sweat (cardio).
After yesterday's Sculpt plus the bonus swim and beavers, I was really sore!

Today's bonus? 30 minutes of shoveling snow...wet heavy snow.

Feeling good - the start of a month is always a renewal sort of day for me, and so far this one is starting off well.

Thursday, January 31, 2008

burn-outs

Got up early this morning and did the Sculpt 3/4 video.

For the 4 circuits, on those things that I lift weights with, I am up to 12 reps (they recommend 8 to 15). Squats vary (I hate squats).

Most interesting is the push-ups. I have a love/hate relationship with push-ups.
On this video we start with a set of decline push-ups (feet up on a chair).
Second set - Fly push-ups (arms pretty wide)
Third set - Fly, Tri, Die (Fly, tricept with arms at side, and then any type as many as you can do)
Fourth set (which is near the end of the 4th circuit, rather than first like the first three) is Burn-outs. As many, as fast as you can. I pumped out 31 on this one today.
Total push ups - 75! Sgt Hill from ROTC would be proud!

I am looking forward to Beavers and maybe a few laps later today, D.v..

PM addition - got to the pool, and after Beavers did 20 laps.

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

Into the water

Went for a swim this afternoon, and did 40 lengths.
Actually swam pretty hard too.

Strange to be in the water, looking out at the bitter cold
(11 below zero wind chill at one point this morning).

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

The day always starts better...

....when I get a work out in.

Yesterday I got up early enough, and was without Meg long enough that I could have gotten a work out in, but I didn't.

This morning I procrastinated, and of course the minute I turned on the DVD player Meg woke up.

But I got in one anyway -

Cardio/Sweat with Abs (and even added and extra rep to each ab workout for 110 total reps)

Last week - 2 swims and a sculpt (with house guests Friday and Saturday)

Thursday, January 24, 2008

Working towards this?

Lately I have been thinking a lot about my rowing days. Yesterday at the gym I had a conversation with a guy who taught at my Prep School and was friends with my rowing coach. Today Andrew asked if he could learn to row. So we googled some videos.

This is a great winter scene!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGNkgB6XCJ0&feature=related

another bitter cold day

I did the sculpt video workout in the AM...and already feeling the soreness!

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Staying inside

With temps below zero wind chill in the AM, and only up to 20 during the day, it looks like I will be inside for a while for workouts!

Tuesday and Wednesday - 40 laps each day in the pool

Saturday, January 19, 2008

At least today...

.... I got a workout in!

Power 90
3/4 Sweat (cardio)
Although it was slightly altered today.
I did 1/2 the power yoga and Meg decided she "wants Momma"(Jennifer is food shopping).
Then did the various knee thrusts while holding Meg.
She then whined as I did jacks, running, lunges, etc.
Then I held her for the kicks.
Couldn't figure out how to do the punches while holding her so I gave up.
Leary to do abs yet as my intestines recover. Will start that again on Monday or Tuesday.

So for the week....
Lots of walking Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday at Disney parks
Saturday - Cardio

Friday, January 18, 2008

How to lose weight while on vacation

12 days away.

Packed the running shoes with every intention of running, etc.

Spent 1/3 of the time not eating at all - complete fasting.
1/3 of the time eating broth, and a few bites of light rations and drinking apple juice.
The rest of the time too afraid to eat more than 1/2 a meal.
The only days I ate normally were the first two while driving down there!

No workouts, but exercised with plenty of walking on the days I was able to go to the Disney parks.

Spent 4 days in hotel bed on antibiotics with the most painful diverticulitis attack I have ever had!

In some ways I am glad to be home and back into the routine beginning tomorrow! Will have video workouts for a while - morning temps predicted in single digits.

Saturday, January 5, 2008

I haven't abandoned this blog....

...but I won't be posting for a few weeks.

Off to Disney with the family. With driving time we will be away January 6th (after Church) until Friday, January 18th.

Have packed the running shoes, watch, etc., to get in some runs and workout in the hotel gym. And of course there will be lots of walking. And I packed the baseball mitts to get some throwing and catching in in the warm weather (Sam and Andrew have a baseball pitching and catchers camp when we return).

I will keep track of workouts on paper and then update the blog when I get back.

And we will be there at the same time as the Disney Marathon - it will be some inspiration.

Finishing another "holiday" week

Well, I got in a Power 90 Sculpt level 3/4 workout in today. Yesterday was a wash.

So this week I
Ran
Swam
Beavers
Video workout

Not too bad for a 'holiday' interrupted week.

Input? Not perfect....

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Tuesday, Jan 1 was a travel day, from Sturgis - with 12+ inches of snow there (but only a dusting here).

Wednesday - started a video workout, but interupted by Meg waking up.
SWAM 36 lengths later in day.

Thursday - Run 8on, 2 off, 17on. Beavers in PM

It is really cold out this AM - 12 degrees (wind chill 2 degrees above).
It was 'refreshing' to say the least!

As for New Year's Resolutions?
Eat better, Exercise more, get up earlier, pray better.....the usual!
